Top award for Uncaged's Dr Dan Lyons
Uncaged's Campaigns Director Dr Dan Lyons has won a top national
prize for his ground-breaking academic research into the history of how
animal testing laws have been made and implemented in Britain.
Having won the prize for the outstanding
thesis of 2007 at Sheffield
University's Department of Politics, his study has now won the Political
Studies Association's (PSA) Walter Bagehot prize for the best thesis
on Government and Public Administration. The PSA is the learned society
for political science in the UK. Dan was presented with the award at
their annual conference in Swansea on 2nd April.
The study used leaked documents describing pig-to-primate organ transplant
experiments as a unique case study of how animal research regulations
are really implemented. Professor William Maloney, who judged the prize,
said:
"Dr Lyons' thesis is theoretically and conceptually sophisticated,
and the descriptive component of Dr Lyons' work is rich in detail and
his analysis is thorough and excellent."
The unique expertise acknowledged by this award firmly establishes Uncaged
as a leading national voice for animals and the vast majority of the
public who are concerned about their welfare and rights.
Dr Lyons comments:
"This award gives great strength to the case I made
in my thesis that when deciding whether animal experiments should take
place and how much suffering is allowed, the Government does not give
animals in laboratories the level of protection and respect that the
public expects and demands. I hope my work will be a stepping stone
towards fairer and more compassionate scrutiny of animal testing in
future. Uncaged will be vigorously campaigning and lobbying the Government
for these historic changes."
