four years hard labour

BETRAYAL OF VOTERS AND ANIMALS

The publication of the official vivisection statistics for the United Kingdom for the year 2001 demonstrate that the Labour Government's betrayal of voters and animals continues unabated.

For the fourth year of Labour's administration, the figures for the number of animals vivisected in the UK has remained virtually static.

A tiny 2.8% drop in 2001 relative to 2000 means that 2,622,442 experiments "likely to cause pain, suffering and lasting harm" were commenced on 2,567,713 more animals last year (the difference between the numbers is due to the fact that some animals are used more than once).

The true figure for the number of animals being subjected to experiments in 2001 will be higher because animals still alive in 2001 who were involved in lengthy experiments that began in previous years do not appear in the 2001 statistics. The figures only reveal those animals used for the first time in 2001.

According to the official figures, these species of animals were subjected to experiments (see table below right, in the order listed by the Home Office).

The statistics reinforce the reality of Labour's cowardly policy on animal experiments. Despite the critical noises made by Labour pre-1997, it's been business as usual as Labour has failed to even begin to tackle the vested interests perpetuating animal experiments.

The steady decline witnessed under the Tories has levelled off: a damning indictment of Labour's extreme pro-vivisection policy.
