About Uncaged

UNCAGED CAMPAIGNS - WHO CARES WINS

In the decade since it was founded, Uncaged has developed a unique campaigning approach which has placed it at the forefront of the anti-vivisection movement.

A highly qualified, experienced and dedicated team of staff brings in-depth knowledge of the political, legal, ethical and scientific issues relevant to animal experimentation.

Our campaigns are based on painstaking research, producing results that command widespread respect from media, politicians and the public alike. Underpinning all of our work is:

  • unwavering opposition to the abuse of animals
  • a scientific critique of vivisection
  • a commitment to democracy, human and nonhuman rights, and environmental sustainability

Uncaged Campaigns is uniquely holistic. We operate at every level, from grassroots protests to motions in Parliament, through to participation in academic discourse. We have contributed to numerous Government consultation exercises on animal experimentation matters and given evidence to a recent House of Lords enquiry. Our analysis has appeared in journals and been quoted by researchers. National and international media have covered our groundbreaking work.

Our principle campaigns demonstrate the breadth and depth of the Uncaged philosophy:

  • Diaries of Despair. A brave and truly historic exposé followed by a monumental legal victory over Imutran/Novartis. Thousands of confidential documents come into the public domain, giving an unprecedented insight into the harrowing reality of animal experiments and confirming the shocking scandal surrounding the Government's conduct.

  • Xenotransplantation. One of the most disturbing developments in animal cruelty and public health hazards ever to emerge, and starkly revealed by the Diaries of Despair. Uncaged has undoubtedly been leading the global opposition to the development of xenotransplantation.

  • Global Boycott of Procter & Gamble. This long-running campaign strikes at the commercial heart of animal testing and gives people the knowledge that empowers them to vote with their purses. Another exposé in the national media - this time of experiments conducted by P&G pet food subsidiary IAMS - has shaken P&G, and may have cost them millions of pounds.

  • Political animals. Exposing the UK Government's capitulation to commercial interests and betrayal of animals. Government 'spin' pushes the message of strict regulation of animal experiments. This is a cynical lie. If the letter of the law, reflecting the wishes of Parliament and public - were applied properly - it would be much more difficult to obtain a licence to vivisect animals than is currently the case...

  • Abolish vivisection. Our ultimate aim to end the ultimate evil. Animal experiments represent the most intense form of systematic cruelty - on an industrial scale - in the history of humanity.

  • Universal Declaration of Animal Rights. Animal rights is the morality of the future. They are the logical consequence of human rights - the two concepts are inextricably linked. Notions of animal "welfare" are empty and pointless without the legal right to have that welfare protected. Uncaged is aiming to promote an international debate about the rights of animals and we will campaign to have those rights enshrined in law.

"Uncaged keeps alive the flame of hope that one day, animal experiments will seem as outdated as today sending children up chimneys seems."
Norman Baker MP, Liberal Democrat spokesperson on animal welfare
