animal rights
Human and Animal RightsMillions of animals across the world are deliberately harmed by human beings. Yet humans and animals share the same basic senses, desires and emotions. All animals - not just humans - deserve the right not to be tortured and murdered. Uncaged is spearheading a historic international campaign for a Universal Declaration of Animal Rights which aims to extend these basic human rights to all sentient creatures. Intensive FarmingBillions of intensively farmed chickens, pigs, and cows are kept in appalling conditions. For example, chickens are reared so intensively that many suffer chronic pain for their entire 6 week life, prompting a professor of animal welfare to describe it as: “The single most severe, systematic example of man’s inhumanity to another sentient animal”. Furthermore, meat and dairy foods can increase the risk of lethal diseases, and livestock are a major contributor to global warming. Animals are also intensively farmed for fur and leather. Animal ExperimentsAnimal experimentation can be incredibly cruel and is an unreliable guide to human biology. Sadly, many of the major cosmetic and household cleaning companies still conduct animal tests to develop their products (see our Boycott P&G and Herbal Essences campaigns). Millions more animals are poisoned, mutilated, given diseases and killed in experiments conducted by universities, pharmaceutical companies, governments and armies. Sadistic ‘Sports’ & CircusesImagine the terror of being chased by a pack of dogs, blasted from the sky, or ritually killed before a baying crowd. This is what animals face when humans decide that hunting, shooting and fighting animals is a fun pastime. Animals in circuses are frequently kept in cramped, unhealthy conditions, degraded and mistreated. Put Yourself in Their PositionWhat’s the worst thing you can ever imagine happening to you or a loved one? Having your baby wrenched from you while you desperately scream their name and try to reach them? Being burnt alive? Having your eyes sown up? Castrated without anaesthetic? Retching and vomiting blood, isolated in a laboratory cage as you are slowly poisoned to death? Being herded with your friends and family into a truck to be transported thousands of miles and then being murdered in front of one another? Spending your entire life trapped in a stinking windowless shed, knee-deep in faeces, lame and unable to reach food or water? The reality is that millions of animals suffer pain, confusion, fear and terror. As Darwin recognised, humans and other animals share ‘the same senses, intuitions, sensations, passions, affectations and emotions’. As Uncaged explain in greater detail here, a truly civilized society must acknowledge the truth and finally grant animals the rights they deserve. Please Defend Animals’ RightsEvery single action you take makes a difference for better or for worse. By simply becoming vegetarian - or better still, vegan - you can save tens of thousands of animals over your lifetime. It’s not as difficult as you may imagine, and there are millions of ‘veggies’ all over the world. It is also vital to boycott animal testing companies. Use your vote at elections to support parties and candidates who support animal rights (see www.vote4animals.org.uk). December 10th is International Animal Rights DayAnimals can’t vote, protest or lobby MPs for protection. They are utterly defenceless in the face of human aggression. That’s why every year on December 10th, thousands of compassionate people around the world hold events to commemorate the animal victims of human tyranny and promote animal rights. |
