Human and Animal Rights

Millions of animals across the world are deliberately harmed by human beings. Yet humans and animals share the same basic senses, desires and emotions. All animals - not just humans - deserve the right not to be tortured and murdered. Uncaged is spearheading a historic international campaign for a Universal Declaration of Animal Rights which aims to extend these basic human rights to all sentient creatures.

DECEMBER 10TH IS INTERNATIONAL ANIMAL RIGHTS DAY

Animals can’t vote, protest or lobby MPs for protection. They are utterly defenceless in the face of human aggression. That’s why in 1998 (on the 50th anniversary of the ratification of the Declaration of Human Rights) Uncaged launched IARD and every year on 10th December compassionate people around the world hold events to commemorate the animal victims of human tyranny and promote animal rights.

Universal Declaration of Animal Rights

Uncaged is at the forefront of a peaceful global movement to end animal abuse. Our momentum is growing as more and more people say 'enough is enough'.

THE DECLARATION

"Inasmuch as there is ample evidence that many animal species are capable of feeling, we condemn totally the infliction of suffering upon our fellow creatures and the curtailment of their behavioural and other needs save where this is necessary for their own individual benefit.

"We do not accept that a difference in species alone (any more than a difference in race) can justify wanton exploitation or oppression in the name of science or sport, or for use as food, for commercial profit or for other human gain.

"We believe in the evolutionary and moral kinship of all animals and declare our belief that all sentient creatures have rights to life, liberty and natural enjoyment.

"We therefore call for the protection of these rights."

INTERNATIONAL ANIMAL RIGHTS DAY

The annual International Animal Rights Day (IARD) - 10th December - aims to remember the animal victims of human tyranny and call for the recognition of our Universal Declaration of Animal Rights (UDAR). The goal of this historic campaign is to build on the recognition of human rights, and persuade humanity that kindness and respect is due to all sentient creatures.

Uncaged built the campaign until hundreds of animal rights supporters across the world were holding candlelit vigils and other inspiring events to mark the annual day of action. This coordinated global day of action helped intensify calls for the recognition of the rights of all sentient beings to life, liberty and natural enjoyment.
